Hazelwood Police Join DEA in Taking Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs on April 28

The Hazelwood sites are just two of more than 5,300 drop off sites across the nation that hope to collect hundreds of pounds of pills.

Last year Hazelwood Residents helped the (HPD) to collect more than 130 pounds of prescription drugs that could have potentially been misused during the National Prescription Drug Take Back event.

"The efforts were not only to prevent abuse of prescription drugs, but to help the environment as well," said Tony Podorski, an event volunteer and member of the . "Many people flush old prescription drugs down toilets or rinse them down drains polluting the local water systems which can be very harmful to unsuspecting local residents." 

This year HPD has set the event for April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Although the Drug Takeback Day is a local event, it is part of a national movement the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) puts together each year to give the public another opportunity to rid their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

This year people can drop off their old, unused or unwanted medications for disposal at the police station at , 415 Elm Grove Lane, or at the Hazelwood Police Sub-Station at . 

It's a free and anonymous process to get rid of the pills, so no questions will be asked.

Last year, more than 377,080 pounds, or 188.5 tons, of prescription drugs  were turned in at about these event sites.
