Hazelwood Condos Lose Part of Roof in Thursday Storm

High winds tore off part of the roof and caused four condos to not be fit for occupancy.

After a brief storm ripped through North County Thursday night, a Hazelwood condominium complex suffered some damage from high winds.

High winds tore off 60-foot of roof from the Morningside Condominiums, located near Interstate 270 and Hanley, and left four residences damaged, according to Hazelwood Communications Coordinator Tim Davidson. No one was injured.

A section of the roof was torn off and left the roof trusses exposed as well as damage to the brickwork’s firewall around 7:10 p.m. Thursday. Hazelwood fire, police and code enforcement officers responded to the scene.

The National Weather Service Meteorologist Jayson Gosselin said winds as high as 60 miles per hour tore through the area Thursday night between 6:30 and 7 p.m.

Hazelwood Fire Department boarded up and tarped the damaged area, and affected residents had places to go for the night, Davidson wrote in an email to Patch. Ameren Missouri also disconnected the electricity to prevent fire hazards with water and rain leaks.

Inspectors found long-term water leaks and mold problems in the building’s second-floor units and indicated structural problems prior to the wind damage, Davidson wrote.

The property manager for the property could not be reached prior to publication.

The American Red Cross responded to help affected residents, Davidson said.
