Hazelwood Child Dies in Car Crash on Interstate 170

Two other individuals involved in the accident are rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

A fatal car crash took the life of a young Hazelwood child Saturday, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

At 4:20 p.m., a 2000 Nissan Maxima, driven by a 16-year-old Hazelwood resident, struck the median on north Interstate 170 and rotated into the southbound side of the highway. That’s when Grace Matney, of Florissant, struck the car, and a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu also hit Matney’s 2003 Chevrolet Blazer, according to the crash report.

An 11-year-old Hazelwood resident, who was in the Maxima, died at the scene of the accident.

Matney and the 16-year-old driver sustained serious injuries and were taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital, respectively.

Matney did not wear a seat belt at the time of the accident, while both girls in the Maxima wore seat belts, according to the crash report.

KPLR is reporting that the Missouri Highway Patrol has identified Katherine Campanella as the girl killed in the crash. Her sister, Elizabeth, was driving the vehicle, according to the report.

STLtoday.com is reporting that a blue Mazda Tribute SUV struck the girls' car and left the scene of the accident. Authorities are looking for the driver of the blue Mazda Tribute. There is damage to its driver's side.
