Driver Charged with DWI After Crashing Into A Hazelwood Home

Police say Albert Bass Jr asked the homeowner for a cigarette before fleeing through a nearby field. Police caught him, saw signs he was drunk and gave him a Breathalyzer test.

A man who crashed his SUV into a Hazelwood home March 7 and fled the scene on foot now faces criminal charges.

Albert H. Bass Jr, 37, of East St. Louis, IL, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a class D felony, and driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

Hazelwood Police said Bass was driving on Dunn Road and lost control of his SUV, driving it into a residence in the 3900 block of Dunn Road in Hazelwood, causing an estimated $10,000 in damages.

The resident said Bass made several attempts to back the vehicle away from the house, but his tires spun in place. The man said Bass then got out of the vehicle, asked for a cigarette, then ran behind the house into some nearby woods.

Police caught Bass running through a field a short distance away.

Officers said they noticed Bass has a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, watery and bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. A breath sample showed his blood-alcohol content was 0.120 percent.

Bass posted a $20,000 bond on Tuesday and was released from St. Louis County jail.
