Celebrate Safe Communities Tuesday

Block parties are fun and what better way to celebrate community synergy that with one to support the City of Hazelwood’s “Celebrate Safe Communities” initiative.

More than a dozen block parties are being held by members of the Neighborhood Watch Commission and their neighbors Tuesday night in Hazelwood.

Hazelwood police officers will stop by each party to interact with neighbors and give them a chance to discuss how to keep their neighborhoods safe.

This is a nationwide initiative and hundreds of cities across the country observe this public safety program on a yearly basis. Hazelwood always observes “Celebrate Safe Communities” on the last Tuesday in September.

On a regional level, many municipalities participate in a similar event, “National Night Out,” but because that event occurs in the summer when this area is at its hottest, City of Hazelwood spokesman Tim Davidson said the city opted to do something different.

"Residents like having the event when it’s cooler," he said to Hazelwood Patch editor Candace Jarrett.

The partners with the Neighborhood Watch Commission, , and to promote safety from crime and fire. 

This year's celebration focuses on home safety, crime reporting, community engagement, school and campus safety, and drug abuse prevention.
