Hazelwood West Student Inspires Florissant Suicide Prevention Run

The annual event will take place next month in memory of the student who took his own life.

Florissant youth are making their mark on a cause and the North County community with its upcoming Suicide Prevention 5K/1-mile run.

The Florissant Youth Advisory Commission will host this annual event, Sept. 21 at St. Ferdinand Park in Florissant. The event started five years ago in memory of a Hazelwood West High School student who took their life in 2007.

This year will be the first year the event features a 5K, City of Florissant Recreation Specialist and Youth Advisory Commission leader Beth Ellis said. In past years, the city solely hosted a 1-mile run, softball tournament and barbecue. Ellis said she suggested the 5K after past participants requested more running from the event.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the state of Missouri, and on average 842 Missourians die from suicide each year, according of the Missouri Department of Mental Health.

Last year, the event raised $1,500, and Ellis said they hope to raise more than that this year.

All of the proceeds go toward the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which helps people learn the signs of suicide risks.

Registration is currently open for the race. It is $20 to register through Sept. 12 and increases to $25 on race day.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female racers for the 5K.
