The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that a wrongful death suit has been filed in a Berkeley drunk driving case. According to the report, the mother of a boy whose father was killed in the crash filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the accused drunk driver. That driver, 33-year-old Alfredo Olvera-Ramirez of the 200 block of Palm Drive in Hazelwood, was charged last month in St. Louis County with involuntary manslaughter for causing a crash that killed 29-year-old Demarcus Upchurch, 29, of University City. According to the report, a blood test showed Olvera-Ramirez had a blood alcohol content of .11, over the legal limit of .08.

Everyone is abuzz with the announcement of a new automotive assembly plant moving to Hazelwood, and Canada is no exception. The CanadianBusiness.com reported on the news as well, citing the the need for a resurgence of automotive industry jobs in the area.

The St. Louis American reports that four Hazelwood School District students won $3,500 as their team plus $2,000 for their school’s performing arts department in a talent competition at the end of the spring semester. The Hazelwood East team including Intisar Faulkner, Ashle Pegues, Vesta Green and Sabrina Harris placed second at the first St. Louis Teen Talent Showcase, which took place at the Fox Theatre, performing their version of Nina Simone’s “Four Women.” The song, released in 1966, describes the lives of four African-American women.

The Pharmaceutical Business Review reports that has received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its Mallinckrodt business for morphine sulfate oral solution. The company has a Mallinckrodt division based in Hazelwood. The solution, which will be launched as a generic in 100 milligrams per 5ml (20 milligrams per 1 ml), is intended to relieve moderate to severe acute and chronic pain in opioid-tolerant patients.

The report states the St. Louis operator of eight Chevys Mexican Restaurants, T&J Restaurants LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and already closed its Columbia, Mo., location. According to the report, T&J’s bankruptcy schedules list assets of $2.8 million and liabilities of $7.7 million.
