Patch Picks: An Ideal Father's Day From A Father's Perspective

Here's some ideas on what to do with dad, from a dad.

  1. Fishing: It's a hobby for some and therapeutic for others. An affordable gift, take dad fishing locally at some place like or Bush Wildlife. If you can do it big, take him on a fishing trip somewhere in or out-of-state.

  • Camping: It can be a family affair. Even someone who isn't considered an outdoorsman can fake it with all of the equipment stores like sell to make camping an easy outing. Get lost at a Missouri State Park.

  • Time Out: Just like mom, sometimes dad needs a day off. If you have that kind of dad, grant him some serenity by disappearing for the day. But have some meals made and ready to go, with the remote in sight on the couch.

  • Stay In: Instead of taking dad to a crowded restaurant or a sticky movie theater. Rent some movies, grill some meat and stay in with dad. Throw in some board games, or better yet, make a home movie expressing your gratitude and let him watch it.

  • A Game: Take dad out to the ballgame to watch the Cards. If he isn't a Cardinals fan, take him to see his favorite team. If you aren't into watching sports, grab him a couple tickets to some upcoming games or season tickets.

  • His Hobbies: If you don't know what are dad's hobbies, find out and try to do a few with him. If he's in to cars ask him if you can wax his with him.

  • Gaming: The video game industry has fans of all ages. If your dad, husband, father or whoever is the dad you are celebrating this Father's Day enjoys video games, sit down with him and play.

  • Golf: There are multiple options for this term. If your dad thinks he's Tiger Woods, take him out on the green. If your dad has no idea what he's doing, might be a better option. But there's also disc golf, which is robust in Hazelwood with a nice course at .

  • NASCAR: Watch a race on television, or go over to and image you and dad are racing on a real track.

  • Man Cave: If your dad has one, ask for permission to hang out with him in it. If he doesn't because of space issues but he really wants one, give him one for the day in the living room. Hook up a mini-fridge next to the sofa, put three bowls of snacks on the table, throw in some weights and some darts and let him be. If you can, put up a partition so he can really feel like it's his space.

  • Deceased Dad: If your father is no longer living, celebrate him still by doing something he loved to do when he was alive. The lack if his physical presence doesn't mean he isn't there with you in spirit.
