Hazelwood Braces for More Severe Weather

Just one week after a tornado ripped through the area, residents say they aren't taking any chances this time around.

There's a chance for more severe weather as we near the end of the week. Earlier in the week hail hit Hazelwood on two consecutive days along with lightening and thunderstorms.

More severe weather is predicted for Thursday and Friday. National Weather  Service (NWS) has a hazardous weather outlook for the area through Thursday night, along with a flash flood watch and flood warning. This means storms in the area are capable of producing tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall according to NWS.

"I called my insurance agent and made sure I had enough coverage," he said.

Donna Parsons works at Dollar General where last week's tornado struck and said she was planning her workplace safe spot.

"(I'll be) grabbing pillows and blankets to get them ready in the bathroom at Dollar General," she said. "(I) already have a flashlight in my apron pocket."

Laurie Tenshler's home was impacted in last week's tornado.

"...Our house is already destroyed from the last one," she said. "Let's hope the hotel we are staying in will be OK."

Danielle Mitchell's plan involved ensuring her grandmother is prepared, as well.

"I will be getting my daughter's blankets and my blanket and pillows and other important things together in a bag to have," she said. "(I'm) going to call my grandma to make sure she gets all her meds in a bag and other stuff together just in case..."

Angie Pingel, a dispatcher for the city, said she has to take a different approach to preparing for a natural disaster since she will be manning emergency phones overnight.

"Sleeping soundly so I am ready to work," she said.

Karen Tinkham Gleason said taking no risks involves a temporary bedroom relocation.

"(I'm) loading up blankets, medicines, snacks and important papers and hauling them downstairs," she said. "The kids, dogs, cats and I will be hanging downstairs for the next few nights and staying glued to the TV."
