Patch Picks: The Summer Camp Scene

This week's list is dedicated to summer camps around the area in which you may be interested in registering the children. There are camps for children in the arts, for children to continue school curriculum and for children with developmental disabilities

This week's Patch Picks column is dedicated to summer camps with a diverse range of activities for children. There are some Hazelwood locations along with camps from all over the various categories and abilities.

  1. : The Hazelwood private school is bringing back its affordable summer camp which is open to public and private school students. The schedule includes travel to many of St. Louis’ kid-friendly attractions and daily “camp clubs.” There are camps for children 2 years old through sixth-grade. Camp is May 31 to July 22. It runs from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The eight-week camp and is $100 a week. 
  2. EMERSON FAMILY YMCA SUMMER CAMPS: This location at 3390 Pershall Road hosts camps for ages 5 to 16 years old. The camps are nine weeks long and begin June 6. Camp themes range from traditional camp, to aquatics camp to sports camp.
  3. VARIETY ADVENTURE CAMP FOR CHILDREN WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES: Some of the camp activities this year included karaoke, cooking, riding therapeutic bikes, ice skating and roaming the Olympic carnival at the Forest Park Visitor Center.  Variety Adventure Camp is for children ages 4 to 12 with physical disabilities.   4. SUMMER ARTS CAMP: COCA's Summer Arts Camp is a premier camp. Camps run from June 6 to August 19. There are multiple camps for every age group starting at 3 years old all the way up to the age of 18. The camps explore all topics including the imagination, theatre, dance and pottery. Registration has already begun.
  5. HAZELWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT BAND OR ORCHESTRA CAMP: If you want your children to expand their musical skills throughout the summer, there will be band and orchestra camps for fourth and fifth-grade students. The camps are scheduled from June 13 through June 23 at Barrington Elementary School. Students who are enrolled in or are residents of the can participate. No transportation will be provided, and the cost is $75 per camp. For questions about summer school call 314-953-5000.The registration deadline is May 20.

  6. : The James J. Eagen Community Center and the JFK Community Center, both in Florissant, are hosting a summer playground camps for children ages 6 to 12 years old. The price for non-Florissant residents is $200 per child. The camp will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 12 to July 22.

  • DAYSPRING SCHOOL OF THE ARTS SUMMER CAMPS: This camp has everything from musical theatre workshops, to drama and dance workshops. There's everything from experimenting with Legos and intro-level filmmaking. There is also tutoring in writing, math and science, as well as algebra class. Classes average $200 per child for a week of play. Check it out HERE.

  • COUNTRYSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL'S TODDLER AND JUNIOR CAMPS: Toddler Camp  is for children ages 12 to 24 months. It runs 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $34 per day. Junior Camp is for children 2 to 3 years old and includes class time, crafts and daily pony rides. Children from 3 to 7 years old have daily pony rides and swim sessions. Halfday camps, halfday plus lunch or full day camp until 3:15 p.m. is available.

  • ST. LOUIS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL CEREBRAL PALSY CENTER CAMP INDEPENDENCE: This camp is for children ages 7 to 18 , functioning at a first-grade level or higher and able to follow directions. Campers must be able to sit independently or with minimal support and have reasonable use of at least one arm. Campers will receive specialized attention from pediatric therapists in sports programs designed to challenge campers to increase their activity level. For more information call 314-454-2642.

  • : The Sculpting Fun Camp at the Foundry Art Centre is a week of creative experimentation. Campers will use wire, paper-mache and clay to sculpt works of art. Sculpting camps are available for first to third-graders in two sessions from July 11 to July 15, and fourth to ninth-graders in one session from July 11 to July15.
