Hazelwood Mallinckrodt HQ Gets $2 Million Investment, Now Publicly Traded

Mallinckrodt CEO Mark Trudeau said there will be $2 million invested into the Hazelwood headquarters.

You may have driven past Covidien on James S. McDonell Boulevard and noticed a different sign in front of the campus.

That's because the company is now making a distinction between Covidien and its pharmaceutical arm, Mallinckrodt. What you see when you drive past is a purple and white Mallinckrodt sign; however, Covidien still has a presence in Hazelwood. There are still Covidien buildings on Campus Parkway and near Phantom Drive.

Hazelwood Patch brought the news in June of the new standalone company being approved via Covidien's board of directors. See here: Mallinckrodt Officially Its Own Company

$2 Million Investment
Mallinckrodt CEO Mark Trudeau said there will be $2 million invested into the Hazelwood headquarters.

The company might also be bringing about 150 new jobs to Hazelwood.

The new standalone company will be one of the largest producers of bulk acetaminophen in the world, according to a Covidien statement. It will also be a leading producer of generic and branded pharmaceutical products and active pharmaceutical ingredients. Contrast agents and nuclear medicine products used in diagnostic imaging will also be manufactured at the facility.

Old Ties to St. Louis
The Mallinckrodt name has a long history in St. Louis as it was once a chemical company, G. Mallinckrodt & Co., used to help ionize uranium for the nation's first atomic bomb as part of The Manhattan Project

That has led to a lot of contention in the area as the aftermath of that project has been a longstanding cleanup. Many in the area also believe local cancer anomalies are linked to the poor management of the remnants of the uranium as it was disposed of throughout the northern portions of St. Louis City and St. Louis County.

Lynn Phillips, Mallinckrodt's media relations manager, spoke with Hazelwood Patch about why Covidien decided to bring back the Mallinckrodt name to the same area, local people feel it hurt the most.

"We have a history that dates back more than 145 years," she said. "The issues you’re referring to are legacy matters dating back to the 1940s, involving work performed for the U.S. Government."

About Mallinckrodt
