Covidien Receives Award for Green Business Practices at Hazelwood Mallinckrodt Campus

The campus reduces its solid landfill waste by 12 percent, and increases recycling by 18 percent in 2011.

is know for being a $2 billion business.

But one thing you may not know about the company pertains to its green efforts. The company recently received an Award of Achievement at its campus located in the , for sustainable business practices and participation in the St. Louis Green Business Challenge. The Challenge is an annual program the St. Louis Regional Chamber & Growth Association and the St. Louis Climate Prosperity Project use to promote green savings in the local area.

“We are proud to be recognized for our commitment to the environment and to the St. Louis community,” said , Mallinckrodt president. “We are dedicated to implementing socially responsible practices. The Green Business Challenge provided us an excellent opportunity to improve environmental performance and share information on progress we are making in water and energy conservation, waste reduction and environmental outreach.”

The company’s involvement in the challenge prompted several campus-wide environmental improvements, according to Mallinckrodt's media relations manager Lynn Phillips,including:

  • Implementing an enhanced, single-stream recycling program, which reduced solid waste to landfill by 12 percent, increased site recycling by 18 percent, and supported Covidien’s five-year waste reduction goals.
  • Replacing three large boilers with two smaller, more efficient boilers; a heat recovery chiller; and several high-efficiency modular hot water boilers, saving 26,400MM BTU per year in natural gas – enough to heat approximately 300 homes in the Midwest for one year.
  • Sponsoring the fourth annual Earth Day Fair, featuring informational booths and displays from vendors to educate staff and encourage them to pursue environmentally friendly business practices. Employees visiting the Hazelwood Green Team booth received reusable mugs and tree seedlings.

Mallinckrodt participated in the 2011 challenge alongside 68 other local area businesses, and plans to participate in the 2012 program beginning later this month.
