Consumer Alert: Citibank Hacked, Upwards of 210,000 Cutomers Affected

Citibank discovered a data breach in early May, according to the Financial Times, but did not disclose the details about the hack. Hazelwood Patch asks residents, "Were you affected by the breach?"

Hackers have broken into Citibank’s computers, stealing names, account numbers and contact information of customers through its Citi's Account Online service, the bank said in a statement to the AP.

Citigroup discovered a data breach in early May, according to the Financial Times, which states the company did not disclose the details about the hack.

Citi said computer hackers breached the bank's network and accessed the data of about 200,000 bank card holders in North America.

This is the latest in a string of cyber attacks on high-profile companies, of which Citi was the.

Another recent bought of hacking incidents were the attacks on Sony. That chain of events shut down the company’s PlayStation Network for about a month. Hundreds of thousands of user profiles containing personal information were exposed. Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America apologized for that incident earlier this week at the E3 video game convention press conference in Los Angeles, Calif.

In a statement to the AP, Sean Kevelighan, a spokesman for Citi's North America Consumer Banking division said, "it has taken measures to prevent these types of attacks and that it is informing affected customers about the incident."

Kevelighan also told the AP that the hackers weren't able to gain access to social security numbers, birth dates, card expiration dates or card security codes.
