Let's Go To A Town, A Town Called Anytown!

Hazelwood Patch blogger Breanna Rena describes Anytown, and her experience at Anytown this summer.

When you hear the name Anytown, you may think, "What is Anytown?" Well Anytown is an eight day overnight camp for high school aged youth. It's an opportunity for teens to learn more about social justice that the outside world doesn't talk about. Things like classism, racism, sexism, etc. It also gives them an opportunity to meet many new and different people. It opens yours eyes to what is really going on, all the while you have fun doing so. You have no phone, computer, ipod or mp3 player. There are no connections to the outside world. It's like a modified version of the MTV show "The Real World."

I, myself am a recent graduate of Anytown. I'll admit, I was really resistant about going. I told my mom I wouldn't go because I couldn't have my phone. I told my mom I couldn't go because my friends wouldn't be there. I came up with every excuse in the book as to why I needn't go. But honestly, I didn't really know what Anytown was. And when I walked into those dorm doors with welcoming hellos and smiles, I thought in my head that maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

I learned so many things that I didn't even know and as the days went by, I really started to like being around the group of nice people that just don't judge. There are no "mean girls" and so many people face so many different adversities on a daily basis, that they just wanted to bond, have fun and learn positive things from each other.

Honestly, by the last day, I really didn't want to leave. But I did really miss my family and friends. If I could do it all again, I would. Anytown changed my views on life and made me want to be a better person and help others do the same. I can really say that Anytown was one of my best experiences in a while.
