Hazelwood Teachers, Staff Train in Safety, Security Procedures

Before heading back to school, teachers and staff get prepared for a possible emergency situation.

Along with preparing their classrooms and curriculum for the 2013-2014 school year, Hazelwood School District teachers and staff members got school safety training Thursday morning.

A number of teachers and staff gathered at Hazelwood Central High School to receive Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate (ALICE) training and work through demonstrations to help prepare for the school year.

The training comes as a part of enhanced safety protocols enacted by the district following the shooting in Newtown, Conn. last December. In June, the Hazelwood Board of Education approved a number of updates to security procedures, which were included in the 2013-2014 budget.

The training allows for those who can evacuate or leave during an active shooting situation to do so safely, versus the duck and cover or go and hide method, which was the original procedure.

Such a change in procedure allows for a higher survival rate in those cases, Assistant Superintendent for Communications Diana Gulotta said.
