Photos: Hazelwood Community Contributes to Scouting for Food in a Big Way

Local scouts helped collect more than 2 million cans of food across the state--and in North County.

Hazelwood Cub Scouts were among the .

“Scouts and their leaders put out 1.4 million bags in Missouri,” North Star District Communications Chairman Fred Schaljo told Patch last week. “More than 500 food pantries rely on Scouting for Food and the generosity of the community to help stock their shelves before the holiday season and the cold winter months.”

Schaljo added Scouting for Food donations provide up to a four-month supply for some pantries.

“Scouts are taught the value of helping others with this program,” he said. “Since the program started 27 years ago, 4.5 million cans have been collected.”

This year, scouts fromn the Greater St. Louis Area Councill collected more than two million cans of food, Schaljo said.

"In North County, including Florissant, Black Jack, Hazelwood and Jennings, we collected 117,952 cans," he said. "The North Star district would like to thank everyone who contributed to Scouting for Food. 

"In the Greater St. Louis Area Council overall we collected just a little more than 2 million cans of food."
