Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Founder Pastor Arthur H. Strege Laid to Rest Today

Pastor Strege began his work in the Hazelwood area on July 1, 1958. He died Monday.

The funeral of Pastor Arthur H. Strege, the man who founded Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd here in Hazelwood is todat, He will be laid to rest at 9:30 a.m.

Services will take place at the church, located at 7380 Howdershell Road. Burial will be in Our Redeemer Cemetery.

His wife, Lucille Strege, died in 2006.

Surviving family includes his daughter, Kathryn M. Hayes of Maywood, Ill.; two sons, Dr. David Strege of Town and Country and Jonathan Strege of Chesterfield; a brother, the Rev. Paul Strege of Affton; and nine grandchildren.

The Board of Missions of the Western District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, brought Strege to Hazelwood as North County began its development boom in the 1950's.

Strege began the work of organizing a congregation in the Hazelwood area on July 1, 1958, according to the church's website.

The church had its first worship service October 5, 1958, with 131 people in attendance. The text for is first sermon was John 10: 14- 16, ‘I am the Good Shepherd,’ from which the congregation later took its official name, the site says.

Strege retired in 1999 after 41 years with the church.
