Hunger Games Fans Unite for DVD Release Party

Walmart will host a special early release party for "The Hunger Games" DVD Friday night.

On Friday night at 11 p.m., fans of the record smashing movie The Hunger Games can finally get their hands on the DVD. Walmart has teamed up with Lionsgate Entertainment to host 2000 DVD release parties around the country at Walmart stores.

While Ferguson's Wal-Mart store isn't participating, there are several locations that are within 25 miles of Hazelwood--and 25 miles is nothing when you'll be one of the first to get your hands on that DVD, right?

A press release from Walmart’s headquarters said the parties will feature “special giveaways, movie trivia and much more.” Staff at the Arnold location were unsure of the party’s exact details, but said that previous release parties had giveaways and cake for shoppers.

Fans who purchase the DVD at midnight will receive a special pack of collectible The Hunger Games trading cards. A select number of random packs will include an autographed card from one of the cast members including Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. Never-before-seen interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of leading cast members will also be accessible for fans on Walmart’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/walmart.

“Together with Lionsgate Entertainment, we are providing Hunger Games fans with a unique and fun way to celebrate and purchase one of the most anticipated DVD releases of the year,” said Seong Ohm, senior vice president and general manager of entertainment for Walmart U.S. “When it comes to entertainment, whether it’s through our broad selection of new releases or licensed merchandise, customers can rely on Walmart to carry the items they want at a price they can afford.”

Fans can pick up an exclusive Hunger Games 2-disc Blu-ray or DVD movie gift set that includes a mockingjay pendant and digital UltraViolet copy. Sales flyers list the 2-disc pack at $26.96 during the party. A one-disc version of the movie is priced at $19.96.

I think Hunger Games fans are as rabid as the Harry Potter people, but I bet they are one and the same! I usually like to rent a movie before purchasing them so I’m glad I added it to my Blockbuster @Home queue. I won’t have to wait to get it mailed, but I can drop off “The Three Stooges” and exchange it at my neighborhood Blockbuster store tomorrow. My coworkers at Dish told me about this option and it’s helped me get through many more movies. I think there will be a lot of Hunger Games-related Halloween costumes this year from kids and adults alike!
