Hazelwood Tornado: How to Help with Cleanup, Support

One of the beautiful aspects of natural disasters is when communities come together to help one another.

Hazelwood Patch has been inundated with people in and out of state wanting to send supplies and come help with cleanup.

Any volunteer opportunity we come across will be posted here. We will do our best to continually update this list.

City of Hazelwood
The City of Hazelwood has opened its Civic Center East, located at 8969 Dunn Road, as a relief shelter with the American Red Cross managing the set-up of cots and blankets, as well as serving warm food. If the tornado affected your home, or you know of someone in need of a place to sleep, head to the civic center. Warm food is also provided.

Hazelwood Baptist Church
The Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief workers will be providing free brush and tree cleanup, and free hot dinners Friday and Saturday. They are based out of Hazelwood Baptist Church, located at 6161 Howdershell Road in Hazelwood. Ruth Thompson with the church said anyone with a need should come sign up for assistance.

"We are helping out anyway we can," she said. "Workers are helping to tarp homes and cleanup, and it's all free."

Thompson said anyone that would like to assist the workers can do so. They too should head up to the church where they will be sent out to an area. Thompson said volunteers will not be able to use machinery like chainsaws to cut trees, but can help with cleanup.

Faith Church St. Louis
Faith Church St. Louis mentioned three ways volunteers can help with church cleanup efforts. People can join the volunteer team at the church's Earth City campus to prepare hot meals. The hospitality team will prepare hot meals for tornado victims, the following times: Friday at 10 a.m., and Saturday at 10 a.m. Meet at the church's Earth City Campus, 3590 Rider Trail South,  if you would like to help prepare hot meals.

To help on-site in Hazelwood join the church's Disaster Relief Team. People can meet the church's volunteer team at Hazelwood's Mobile Command Center, 7023 Howdershell Road in the Dollar General Parking Lot, to serve people in the community. The church volunteers will also help clean the area and give food to families affected by the storm. Wear work boots, bring gloves and bring any tools that you have (wheel barrels, shovels, rakes, etc.) On-site times are as follows: Friday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

United Way

Humane Society of Missouri  
The City of Hazelwood said the Humane Society of Missouri is set up in back of the Hazelwood Civic Center East Lot. Displaced residents can board pets for up to 10 days. For additional information call (314) 647-4400.
Can board your pets for up to 10 days; it doesn't matter if you use the relief shelter or not.

Hazelwood School District

The Hazelwood School District (HSD) Learning Center, at 15955 New Halls Ferry Road, will be open Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accept donations and supplies. They can also be mailed to the location. Any financial donations should be addressed to: Hazelwood Community Response Team.
