Halloween Happenings: Hazelwood Offers a Spooktacular Alternative to Traditional Trick-or-Treating
Looking for a fun and safe way to celebrate Halloween with your kids? The City of Hazelwood's "Halloween Happenings" event could be exactly what you need--and it's free.
If your family hasn’t made plans for Halloween yet, why not celebrate with the community? The City of Hazelwood has a special program for parents and kids to enjoy on Oct. 31 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
Dubbed “Halloween Happenings,” the event, which will be held at the Hazelwood Community Center in White Birch Park, is free and open to the public--and the city promises that no child will be bored for even a second.
“In addition to getting a grab bag of goodies, youngsters will have a fun time playing spirited games, guessing the number of candy pieces in a pumpkin-designed glass jar, and going on a Halloween hayride,” the city said in a press release.

Costume Contest

A costume contest will begin at 7:20 p.m. and prizes will be given for several age groups, including the following.
- Ages 2 & under
- Ages 3-5 years
- Ages 6-8 years
- Ages 9-11 years
- Ages 16 & over
Coloring Contest for Kids
There’s also a coloring contest for kids in two age categories—kindergarten through second grade and third grade through fifth grade. You can pick up the coloring page and entry from at the Hazelwood Community Center on Teson Road or at the Civic Center East on Dunn Road. Entries for the coloring contest need to be submitted by Halloween—and kids can work on them during the celebration if they like, the city said.
There’s a limit of one entry per child, and the coloring must be done by the child only with no assistance from parents or older siblings in order to qualify.
Judges will assess the entries and announce the winners on Nov. 1, and one prize will be awarded for each grade level. Prize winners will be notified and asked to pick up their winnings at Civic Center East.
