About this column:
Hazelwood Patch connects with the community in a number of ways, including through social media. We're sharing some of our most interesting and compelling conversations with our readers. If customer reviews are any indication, you should probably stop what you are doing and try Angelo's Chicago Taste's gyros. At least, that's according to reviews on sites such as Yelp and Urban Spoon as well as Hazelwood Patch. "By far the best gyro place in this town," said Jen J. on Yelp. "I've eaten the Gyro Platter countless times. It comes with insane amount of meat, fresh tsatsiki sauce and cheese cube. You will certainly have enough leftovers for at least one full meal afterwards. Gyros are not fancy food but sometimes it is harder to crank out good flavors from simple ingredients. …
If there's a complaint to be had about Kelly's Donuts in Hazelwood, it's that all the good doughnuts go fast. And early. At least, that's according to reviews on sites such as Yelp and Urban Spoon as well as Hazelwood Patch. Kelly's Donuts, located at 7919 N. Lindbergh Blvd., serves hot and fresh doughnuts as early as 4 a.m. Customers, for the most part, agreed the local donut shop is a community gem. "Wonderful mom and pop shop!" said Amber M. on Yelp. "Never have I been disappointed, always fresh doughnuts. Tip though get there early the best one go fast!!" "This place is awesome," said …
Located in the busy Elm Grove Shopping Center on North Lindbergh Boulevard, Pueblo Nuevo is a Mexican eatery that has been in the Hazelwood area for years. With a varied menu and prices that won't break the bank, Pueblo Nuevo offers an authentic taste of Mexico. Hazelwood Patch took a look at the restaurant's reviews on sites such as Yelp and Urban Spoon, and found most customers of Pueblo Nuevo in Hazelwood either loved the Mexican restuarant, or loved to hate it. Since opening more than two decades ago, the original restaurant, located at 7401 N. Lindbergh Blvd., has taken over the …
Customers of Amighetti's in Hazelwood came for the popular bread and left wanting more, according to reviews made by those that ate there. Hazelwood Patch took a look at the restaurant's reviews on sites such as Yelp and Urban Spoon, and found most customers of Amighetti's, located at 209 Village Square Shop Center, found the restaurant lacking. "They were talked up by all the locals so our expectations were high," said Kim N. on Yelp. "They were just ok. The bread and meat and special sauce all good just nothing special. Subway and Goodcents are just as good and cheaper. The staff was …
It's coming to an end, but if you've been on social media at all during the month of November you've noticed that a large portion of your friends, followers and whatever else are expressing daily gratitude. It's a project entitled 30 Days of Gratitude. This project was a community experiment and it even has its own Facebook page. "Based on the scientific research that practicing gratitude on a daily basis can increase your happiness and life satisfaction, the concept was to bring people together to experience and practice gratefulness for 30 days," the website states. The official project …
Starbucks is planning to expand and open 1,300 new stores next year, but if you'd like to get a job with the coffee giant, first log on to Facebook. The national chain has unveiled a new system called Branch Out that will let potential applicants search for jobs using their social networks, according to a report in the St. Louis Business Journal. The system takes the form of an app on the Starbucks Facebook page that lets users browse open positions by location, but it's also a promotional effort with videos about what it's like to work at Starbucks and links to info about the company's …

I had no idea when I wrote that question that so many would have opinions on North County business staples. On Wednesday I asked Facebook fans and Twitter followers which Hazelwood and North County businesses they couldn't live without and there were quite a few opinions. Like Hazelwood Patch on Facebook and join our discussions in real time! Michele Schindler-Bauer said she can't live without Cose Dolce bakery in Ferguson. "Best. Chocolate. Cupcakes. Ever," she said. Schindler-Bauer also noted Ferguson Brewing Company, de.lish Cheesecake Bakery and Cafe in Florissant, and Hair Express in …

"You better red-neck-onize!" Whether you love the show or despise it, the fact is that TLC's Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is a ratings success. In fact, Perez Hilton reports, the show recently received the highest ratings of its record-breaking season—nearly 3 million people tuned in to watch. “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo has become a pop culture phenomenon,” one show rep told Hilton. “What you see is what you get and we are excited to share even more of Alana and her family's unbridled hilarity, sincerity and love with our viewers.” Train-Wreck Allure? We wondered whether people were watching the…
After being criticized for a recent 25-pound weight gain (and for smoking marijuana on stage at a recent Amsterdam concert), musical sensation Lady Gaga came forward and admitted that she’s been struggling with bulimia and anorexia since she was 15. Gaga posted a photo of herself on her social media site wearing nothing but a bra and panties and a caption that read, “Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15,” adding “Body Revolution 2013.” Many fans are following Gaga’s lead, posting photos of themselves in all their flawed glory on her homepage, all using the “Body Revolution” title. And her fan …

Monday afternoon after I saw the Google Maps car rolling through my neighborhood streets, I hit our Hazelwood Patch Facebook page to ask if anyone else had seen it in the area. Several members of the community spoke up, including Trish Caimi-Schroeder, who said she had seen it about a week ago on Williams Boulevard. “I guess they make their rounds to all of Hazelwood,” she added. Kathy LoGrasso posted that her friend had seen it in St. Charles recently, and Sheri Rodgers said she’d seen it there on Saturday near Bass Pro. “Wow, that’s gotta be a hard job, I can’t even imagine,” posted Laurie …
As parents in the Hazelwood School District are left wondering why Superintendent Steve Price was replaced last week, one mom has published her opinions about and experiences with Price on her Patch Local Voices blog. When she had concerns with her son’s elementary school, blogger and mom-of-four Jeannine, whose son has a neurological disorder, said she went straight to Price for help, as well as the school board and assistant superintendents. “None of them returned calls to address concerns, made changes, or got involved to see if indeed things were as bad as I said. It was,” she writes in …
Updated 3:32 p.m. Patch received word from Hazelwood School District Assitant Superintendant Diana Gulotta, who said the fire was not started by a cigarette. Original Story--There was a small fire in a basement-level trash can on Friday at Hazelwood West High School. According to an email sent by Principal Dennis Newell, the school was evacuated and no one was injured. "The fire department responded and checked the lower level of our building," Newell wrote in the email. "Students who had classes in the lower classrooms on the basement floor were housed in the Commons for the remainder of …

After the Hazelwood School District announced that it would step up its nutrition standards again this year in response to the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, I didn’t think too much about it, other than to be pleased that my kids would be served healthier food. The district had made some pretty big changes a few years ago and I didn’t hear any complaints from my kids, so I assumed the new changes would be similarly received. However, on the first day of school, my Hazelwood sophomore came home and complained that he’d been forced to take vegetables and milk that he didn’t want. And …
As you might know, Hazelwood Patch has an active and community-friendly Facebook page where we share news, tips, laughs and information with our fans. But we also have amazing conversations and make great connections with our Facebook community, and sometimes, we can even offer support and learn something about ourselves and the community. A recent conversation that happened on Facebook touched me profoundly, and I felt that I needed to share it with our readers who might not already be connected to us there. A Father, Remembered After last week’s breaking news about the fire in an apartment …
