This week's Whiz Kids were recognized as being among "The Power of Youth."

North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice (NCCU) honored three Hazelwood School District students at its annual Youth Appreciation Day dinner themed The Power of Youth.

Hazelwood West High School senior Brittney Watkins and sophomore Kirsten Henderson received the community service/exemplary citizenship awards. Hazelwood East Middle School sixth-grader Courtney Andrews received an award for his academic achievement.

“I was a little scared but excited. I haven’t got up to speak in front of a group of people in a long time,” Andrews said in a statement.

The self-proclaimed numbers hobbyist was nominated by one of his teachers.

Watkins said it felt great receiving the honor. The senior plans to attend Princeton University for political science and said through her love of English and history she plans to be an innovator.

"I like learning about the past because it can help you move forward into the future," she said.

Henderson had a couple entities nominate her for her award. Both the Hazelwood Police Department and St. Martin de Porres Church saw her passion for helping in her community and decided to do so.

“I was thrilled, excited and just really, really happy to be seen and recognized for what I have done in the community,” she said in a statement.

Upon graduation, Henderson said she plans to attend the University of Missouri and specialize in physical therapy where she will be able to continue helping people.
