This week marked the first signs of winter as a light snow blanketed the area on Dec. 12. My son saw the white fluff in all its glory for the first time. Later on more winter weatherappeared as Hazelwood was frosted with a layer of ice that caused school closures, but all survived to enjoy a warmer weekend.
Government political filings opened Dec. 14 with seats available on the Hazelwood City Council and the Hazelwood School Board of Education. Both held their final meetings of 2010. During the school board meeting, the board approved next school year's academic calendar.
This was also a busy week for holiday crime as the Hazelwood Police Department caught not only drunk drivers during a sobriety checkpoint, but also shoplifters at St. Louis Mills Mall. The department also trained store owners and their employees on a counterfeit scam that occurred at the mall.
