High School Sports Wrap: Hazelwood West Volleyball Remains Unbeaten in Conference Play

Wildcat soccer stays on top with Jeff Cameron's lead.

Hazelwood West volleyball is continuing its winning streak. The Wildcats seem to be on a hot streak that can't be cooled.

The team (10-7, 5-0) remained unbeaten in conference play with a hard-fought 25-23, 25-15 win over Pattonville on Tuesday.

Sara Gregor led the attack with 10 kills. Missy Long added five kills. Amanda Molinari had 10 assists.

McCluer North (2-10, 2-2) broke a seven-match losing streak with a 25-21, 25-17 win over McCluer (8-7, 2-3) on Wednesday.

The Comets have slowed somewhat after winning their first four matches.

Hazelwood Central (2-13, 2-3) broke a five-game skid with a 25-1, 25-12 win over Riverview Gardens on Wednesday.

McCluer North softball saving the best for last

The Stars are riding a 14-game winning streak following a 7-0 win over Hazelwood West on Friday in the championship game of the Class 4 District 6 Tournament at McCluer North.

North, which hopes to reach the state tournament for the first time in school history, will face St. Joseph's Academy (15-9-1) at 4:15 p.m. in a sectional contest Wednesday at St. Joseph's.

Senior pitcher Rachel Franck tossed a five-hit shutout in the win over West (11-14).

North (20-4) scored four times in the third to take control.

Tynai Burrow leads the club with 47 RBIs. Monica Vanhook is batting a hefty .474.

Franck is 19-4 with a 2.44 ERA. She has struck out 139 batters and walked just 22 in 135 innings this season.

North won the league title with a perfect 6-0 mark. But the Stars have had trouble against sectional and quarterfinal opponents in the past.

"It's all about confidence," North coach Patrick Dougherty said. "If they think they can beat them, they will play a lot better."

"I think we have a chance, I really do. If we come out and play our game, we'll be fine," Franck added.

McCluer (5-17) and Hazelwood Central (7-15) ended their seasons earlier in postseason play.
