Hazelwood's Amighetti's Leaves Customers Wanting More
Most customers found the restaurant's signature sandwich—the Amighetti Special—desirable. Others found the sandwich only worthwhile when fresh.
Hazelwood Patch took a look at the restaurant's reviews on sites such as Yelp and Urban Spoon, and found most customers of Amighetti's, located at 209 Village Square Shop Center, found the restaurant lacking.
"They were talked up by all the locals so our expectations were high," said Kim N. on Yelp. "They were just ok. The bread and meat and special sauce all good just nothing special. Subway and Goodcents are just as good and cheaper. The staff was really sweet and loves to talk. They were friendly and double checked my sandwich to make sure there was no cheese on it."
If you've been in St. Louis for any amount of time, chances are you've heard of Amighetti's. Its original store on The Hill has been around since 1921, when Louis Amighetti, an Italian immigrant, opened the small bakery-turned sandwich shop. Many years later, Amighetti's expanded, creating two additional stores in Rock Hill and Hazelwood, Missouri.
According to Sauce Magazine, Hazelwood's Amighetti's scored an 8.3 (out of 10) on its overall user score—that breaks down to an 8 for food; 8 for service; for atmosphere and 10 for value.
Most customers found the restaurant's signature sandwich—the Amighetti Special, which is recommended by owner Mary Ellen Downing—desirable. Others found the sandwich only worthwhile when fresh.
"Some friends and I hit up Amighetti's after coming home from Art Hill and a day of sledding," said Mindy P., a Hazelwood resident, on Yelp. "We didn't have a whole lot of time to eat and wanted something different, it is in a good location, snuggled into Village Square at 270 & Lindbergh."
Hazelwood Patch restaurant reviewer Stephanie Shepard stopped by the location and found the food pretty good. See her article on the special: A Taste of The Hill in Hazelwood.
"The soft bread yields easily upon the first bite to reveal a massive pile of delicious meats and cheese," she said. "The tangy, rich special dressing adds a brilliant depth of flavor that is unmatched by imitators."
