Free or Extremely Cheap Ways to Exercise in Hazelwood

This week's Patch Picks shows you how to get out and about in Hazelwood in order to get in shape this spring.

As it warms up outside more alternatives for free and inexpensive exercise will become that much easier to find in Hazelwood. Take a look at this week's list on how to get out and get going.

  1. Take a Bike Ride: Take advantage of the warmer weather and longer days by biking through some scenic bike routes Hazelwood has to offer. The Aubuchon and St. Cin route is 2.25 miles and encompasses Aubuchon Park and St. Cin Park and crosses Coldwater Creek into Hazelcrest Condominiums while the Pershall Park route is 2 miles through residential neighborhoods including Pershall Park, Robinwing, Utz, Airshire, Norshire, and Fee Fee Hills.

  2.  Try a Skate/BMX Park: For the more dare-devil types White Birch Park hosts a skate park. Take the kids to spin their wheels or give it a go yourself. It opens March 14 and must be 50 degrees outside to use. The city offers pad and helmet rental for $1.00 and participation waivers must be on file before access is allowed. Prices are $1.00 per day for Hazelwood residents and $2.00 per day for non-residents.

  3.  Run Track: Both Hazelwood West high and middle schools have fantastic tracks for those who want to use it. Practice running the mile like you did in high school or just walk a couple laps to get in shape.

  4.  Disc Golf: Otherwise known as Frisbee Golf, this sport is tons of fun and makes you forget you’re exercising at all! Participants try to make par by throwing discs into baskets throughout a course. White Birch Park has an 18-hole course that cuts through trees and a winding creek. The price is .50 cents to play.

  5.  Play Tennis: Become the next Venus or Serena Williams this year. Howdershell Park has tennis courts to practice on and they are even lighted for those who wish to play in the evenings. The park also has horseshoes and racquetball/handball court.

  6.  Learn a History Lesson: Explore the historic buildings at Brookes Park on Brookes Drive. Situated on 3.4 acres, there’s plenty of room to walk around and take in the scenery of the beautiful buildings while dropping some pounds.

  7.  Have a Ball: Go to Musick Park located on North Hanley Road and Latty Avenue, and play a game of good old baseball or kickball. The park also has a playground for children right next to the ball field. Take a trip back to your childhood by grabbing a group to play a baseball game and then head on over to the swings.

  8.  Swim like a Fish: Once the weather warms and Memorial Day arrives, take a swim at the pool at White Birch Bay. Do some laps or just float around relaxing in the sun rays.

  9.  Workout: Both the Hazelwood Community Center located on Tesson Road, and theCivic Center East on Dunn Road offer exercise equipment and various classes to get your blood pumping.

  10.  Go Fish: Pack up a sack lunch, fishing pole, and stringer and head over to Harry S. Truman Park for a day of fishing. All that casting and reeling could work up a sweat-especially if you catch the big one. The minimum length for channel catfish and bass is 12 inches, with a limit of two bass and four catfish.

Kettlebells at the civic center all year long. There are classes offered every six weeks. People taking the class are all ages (18-80) and in a variety of conditioning shapes - some are extremely fit and some are doing it for the first time, but the Kettlebells are great for everyone. Build strength, flexibility and balance - it's all about your core!

Kelly, thanks for that. We actually sat in on a class last month and have a feature on it for Thursday! Good suggestion!
