Hazelwood Schools Donate More Than $1,650 for Dred, Harriet Scott Statue
Six Hazelwood School District schools collected money during January and February as part of a penny drive to erect and dedicate a statue of Dred and Harriet Scott at the Old Courthouse in downtown St. Louis.
All of the funds have been tallied and the schools collected more than $1,650 for the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation. Checks have been presented to Lynne M. Jackson, Dred Scott's great-great-granddaughter, who is also the president of the foundation.
The schools that donated are:
- Hazelwood West Middle
- Hazelwood Northwest Middle
- Jana Elementary
- Lusher Elementary
- McCurdy Elementary
- Russell Elementary
Each school that donated $500 received a three-inch diameter Dred Scott commemorative penny. It features an image of Scott on one side and an image of President Abraham Lincoln on the other face.
Brender Benson, a vice president with M&I Bank, received the oversized commemorative check made by Jana students and she accepted checks from Hazelwood West Middle and McCurdy Elementary schools. The other HSD schools sent their donations directly to the bank.
